NCSoft security troubles summed up

We received some feedback on this particular post and I wanted to clarify a few things concerning NCWest security.

There are discussions on Aion Source forums and other Aion related forums and websites about the recent wave of hacked game accounts by the gold selling companies and what NCSoft is doing about it. There is a vocal group of people on these sites and forums blaming NCSoft for having their accounts hacked (or their friends’ accounts hacked). In one of these I came across the strip published below and found it to be very humorous. Here’s why. I find it absolutely ridiculous that it would be possible in any way to have the security so severely breached in a multi-million dollar company like NCSoft. That’s why I posted it under the humor category.

In theory there would be two points of entry for hackers to access your account data. In theory they could hack into NCSoft’s site and get the data from there. Without going into much detail I find this idea so ridiculous it amuses me. I’ve been in much smaller companies than NCSoft and that idea would be ridiculous even there.

The other point of entry are players themselves. They download something onto their computer, visit a site promising them easy leveling, browse an “underground forum” promising them inside secrets of the game or click a link in an email that looks like it comes from some official source. What you get is a program or a Trojan that keylogs you and gets your private information. To paraphrase Tamat, in almost all cases the reason for compromised accounts is RMT related activity initiated by the players themselves.

Occam’s razor (the simplest explanation or strategy tends to be the best one) guides us to one simple conclusion:

There are no security breaches in NCSoft and they are certainly working very hard to prevent one from ever happening.

I would suggest you all rather read Scott Jennings’ article that describes the steps you can take to protect your computer and account from being compromised.

We, at Aion Life, will also try and join the fight against RMT in our own way. We hope we’ll be able to make some sort of announcement concerning this in the next 10 days.

Aion gets a new producer – what happened to the old?

Pictured to the right is Chris “Kinslon” Hager, the new producer for Aion West. He was previously an associate producer when Aion launched and has been with NCSoft West since 2005. We, at Aion Life, congratulate Chris on his new appointment and wish he keeps Aion going even stronger in this new year. He had this to say about his promotion (source):

“I’m really excited about Aion and the direction for the upcoming year. Last year was a massive undertaking getting Aion launched, and this year we are really going to focus on making sure we are communicating effectively with the community, giving players the best experience possible, and are looking forward to some exciting new things coming up this year with updates and events.”

You can check out Chris’ linkedin page for all of his credentials.

There have been questions about what happened to the previous producer – Brian Knox. His departure was never talked about in public. Seems that Brian left in November to an unannounced company to become a senior producer (according to his linkedin page). Brian was one of the major driving forces behind the Aion launch hype machine (along with Lani) and the last thing he had to say to the Aion population he partook in making was:

“Welcome to the team @aion_tamat !!” (his last Tweet on Twitter).

There is speculation that the severed hand Chris Hager is holding in the above picture might have something to do with Brian’s “disappearance”. Neither of them were available for comment :P .

How to change armor or weapon type in Aion

Apparently, we’re always looking for drops with better stats, but when we finally get them, it usually turns out to be of wrong armor or weapon type. Aion designers have provided a remarkable option that can solve this problem.

Armor Exchange

If you want to change your armor type you have to buy Daevanion’s Light for ~59,400 kinah. For Elyos go to Sanctum and buy it from divine accessory vendor Ophenes or Perena. For Asmodians, divine accessory vendors Gerad and Olda are located in Pandaemonium.

Your next destination is also in Sanctum (Pandaemonium) – inside the Training District (the area with all class trainers for lvl 1-25). There are two Priests next to the High Priest:
Sibylla, Armor exchange Priest and Aithra, Weapon exchange Priest,
(for Asmodians Narvi, Armor exchange Priest and Bor, Weapon exchange Priest).

Talk to Sibylla (Narvi for Asmodians) and she will give you an option to Exchange Regular Daevanion Armor. This is the exchange process and you will be asked which type and piece of armor you want to exchange.

Weapon Exchange

If you’re looking to exchange a weapon, the weapon NPC is in the same room, and you also need Daevanion’s Light for exchange process. Talk to Aithra (Bor for Asmodians), next to the High Priest, and she will give you an option to exchange Regular Daevanion Weapon. You will be asked which kind of weapon you have for exchange (magical or physical weapon) and what sub-type of weapon specifically (sword, greatsword, staff, polearm, etc.). You can also exchange a shield here.
